I have suffered abuse from a member of a church organisation, what should I do?

Should I talk to the Police?

In most countries, the police have dedicated officers who will listen to your complaints with compassion and will take your allegations seriously. Not all police are trained to deal with these types of allegations and if possible, you should ask to speak to a specially trained police officer. Once you have discussed the details of your experience, the police will be able to investigate the allegations.

Can I claim compensation and where from?

Your lawyer may advise that you can pursue a claim through the civil courts.

Some countries also operate government compensation schemes and you should talk to your lawyer about them.

Is there a time limit on when I can claim ?

Time limits and their flexibility differs between countries. You should ask your lawyer about this.

How would I pay for a claim ?

Most countries have a government funded legal aid scheme to help victims of abuse. You should ask your lawyer if you are eligible

What compensation can I get ?

I understand that no amount of compensation will make up for the appalling abuse some people have suffered but it can help you get through difficult times and help pay for psychotherapy. Levels of compensation vary between countries.

Will I have to go to Court ?
